Dental hygiene is a serious matter—just take it from former United States Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, who once said, “You’re not healthy without good oral health.” While it’s true that 146,200 dentists were working in the U.S. in 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, we’ve identified some areas of the country that we believe may have an increased need for locum tenens dentists beginning this fall. If you’re a locum dentist looking for a new assignment as we head into the end of 2023, here are four states to keep tabs on when searching for temporary jobs.
Georgia
Get away from the cold this fall by taking a locum dentist job in peachy Georgia (pun intended)! The Peach State is one of four that we project to see an increase in demand for skilled locum tenens dentists in the upcoming months.
The 24th-largest state by area in the U.S., Georgia is well-known for its capital city, Atlanta, which is also its most populous. But the state isn’t all big cities—in fact, 26% of Georgians live outside of large urban areas, and 120 of the state’s 159 counties are considered rural, according to Georgia’s Rural Center.
There’s a lot to see and do when you’re working in Georgia. For example, visit the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta, or get a sugar- and history-rush instead during a stop at The World of Coca-Cola, an interactive museum chronicling the history of The Coca-Cola Company, which was founded in Atlanta during the 1800s. Have a weekend off? Take a trip to some of neighboring states, like Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Alabama, and discover what those places have to offer.
Mississippi
In addition to Georgia, we’re projecting that Mississippi, also known as the Magnolia State, is another southern state that will need locum tenens dentists this fall.
There’s a lot to see and do in Mississippi, including the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, which explores the history and impact of the Civil Rights Movement. If you’re a music buff, visit Elvis Presley’s Birthplace in Tulepo and get an insight into the king of rock and roll’s upbringing. Mississippi borders four states—Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana—so there’s some exploring to do, if you have a few days off and you’re up for the challenge.
Illinois
Not interested in taking an assignment in the South? Maybe the midwest is calling you! If so, consider taking a locum tenens dentist job in Illinois, also known as the Prairie State. We project to see demand for locum tenens dentists here in the upcoming months.
Illinois is well-known for Chicago, it’s largest and most populated city, but there’s a lot more the state has to offer. Rural towns dot Illinois’ vast stretches of flat land, connecting larger cities like Springfield, Peoria, and East St. Louis with one another. While we can’t be exactly sure where dentist jobs will pop up, the state’s diversity of environments give locums plenty of options to choose from.
Attractions are abundant in Illinois, from the Art Institute of Chicago, to Starved Rock State Park southwest of the city, to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield: honest Abe’s old stomping grounds.
Minnesota
Like the idea of moving to the Midwest, but don’t want to take an assignment in Illinois? Travel a little farther north and take a job in Minnesota, instead! Like all the states in this list, we project that locum tenens dentists will be needed in the North Star State.
Minnesota is full of natural beauty—it’s not called “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” for nothing—so you can be sure you’ll have a lot to explore if you take an assignment here. In addition to seeing what Mother Nature has to offer, consider taking a shopping trip to the Mall of America on the outskirts of St. Paul, which is the largest shopping mall in the U.S., or discover new art for free at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis.
